Alyxis 15th Birthday

So, Alyxis and all her friends have been on this Alice in Wonderland kick. Long before Johnny Depp, (although Alyxis thinks he's hot and seen most of his movies). Anyway, we brainstormed and came up with some pretty cool ideas to have a Mad Hatter Tea Party. Wouldn't you guess everything seemed to go wrong. They garnished Jaye's check, so we had little money. Value Village, Good Will, and Saint Vincent thrift stores aren't nearly as inexpensive as it use to be, they just didn't have what I wanted. Plus, of course it would be super expensive to buy the cake, the creative mommy I is, we decided to make one.

Marzipan figures: CAUTION!!!!!
I DO NOT recommend this to anyone, although it was fun playing with edible play dough so to speak, it was crazy making it. I wish we had pictures of the process of making it. It was ewwwie goooey fun, NOT. For those of you that don't know Marzipan, is made with almond paste, water, sugar and egg. I bought a bulk pound in a half of almonds and Alyxis blanched them and we ground them up in the espresso grinder.

Cupcakes that later were to become Mushrooms. Easier said than done

Cookies for the Queen of Hearts

Under the sprinkled cookies, you see the chocolate chip cookies, they were suppose to say eat me on them but we didn't even get the words EAT ME on them before they got eaten up. Seem's they were just looked too good to wait for the party.

The first time I had successfully crumb coated a cake, its easier than I ever thought.

after I added the color coconut for the grass effect.

The giant mushroom made out of Rice Crispy Treats, thanks Cake Boss, I will never be as good as you but great tips.

Starting to put all the pieces together.

The finished product!!!!!

I had made a trip to Value Village to try and find mismatched tea cups and sauces, maybe my first mistake was thinking they would have even one mismatched set, ok so a can we say, they had whole sets missing just one. GRRRR, I was so disappointed I didn't feel like back tracking and heading to Goodwill or going to Saint Vinnies, so I found a white tea pot for $1.00 along with what looked to be matching tea cups and saucers in plain white, then I found a set of six saucers and a set of 5 china saucers each for a dollar, so I picked them up and I figures we could paint different things on them. Nothing extravagant ! Well Jazzy got her little talented hands on them and used my pastel permanent markers and this is what we got.
The Duchess...

The Cheshire Cat...

Yummy finger sandwiches
The Tea Pot...

And because I wanted to be totally different..Sonic The Hedgehog...

They had cookies, cake tea and finger sandwiches. They had so much fun they or mom forgot to take pictures of the actual tea party. Bad mommy...
